Why I am fundraising for The Rotary Foundation
Dear family & friends am celebrating my retirement by trekking to Everest Base Camp on 23 April with 14 other trekkers to raise monies for Rotary's campaign to eradicate polio, and provide vaccinations for all children, particularly those living in Pakistan and Afghanistan where it is still prevalent.
Polio strongly resonates with me and the work of Rotary in trying to eradicate it worldwide, as has occurred with smallpox.
Being born in 1953, my dear mum used to tell me how fearful people were of polio and how anxious she was when I was born given the epidemic in 1952, and the first vaccine not becoming available until 1955. Like other boomers, I grew up knowing children with deformed limbs and needing to wear braces. I learned about the iron lung being invented as an artificial respirator to treat patients with polio.
After my trek to Annapurna Base Camp in 2023, have been yearning to return to the Himalayas, and EBC has been on my bucket-list for decades. Our route will take three weeks as we are trekking an alternative route across two high passes (Renjo La & Ch La) in the Khumbu Valley and via Gokyo Lakes.
So please donate to our worthy cause!
When the going gets tough, it will be an extra boost to think of your support and the monies raised to vaccinate the kids!
A big thankyou!
Love Sharon xx
