IT'S OVER! After 18 days, I've finally completed an incredible 1,856-mile journey cycling from the Mississippi River's beginnings near Bemidji, Minnesota all the way to its end near New Orleans, Louisiana. What an adventure it was! Each day brought new challenges - unexpected dirt and gravel roads that tested my patience, relentless southerly headwinds that only finally shifted in my favor during the last three days, and scorching heat so intense that weather services along most of the route were warning people to avoid strenuous outdoor activities during midday hours. There I was, pedaling right through it all!
But every mile was absolutely worth it. The breathtaking scenery along America's greatest river, the genuine warmth and hospitality I encountered in small rural towns (some with populations of just a few hundred people), and the uncertainty of never knowing what surprises awaited around the next bend made this an unforgettable experience. This ride capped off 60 years of criss-crossing America, with the last decade dedicated to supporting Rotary's mission to eradicate polio worldwide.
While my bike is now off the road for some well-deserved maintenance and my own recovery, the most crucial part of this quest is just beginning: helping make polio the second disease in human history to be completely eradicated. With a background in neuroscience and immunology, I can explain why this goal is absolutely achievable, and the reasons why the view from a bicycle seat is so much more enlightening than when it's filtered through a car’s windshield. We're so close to the finish line! Your support of Rotary's Polio Plus campaign could be the difference between success and letting this terrible disease continue to paralyze children around the world. Please join in this final push - together, we can make history and give every child a polio-free future.
