Update #24

Oh my, OH MY #2 ! Folks, in 41 years a Rotarian, I've enjoyed many, many District Conferences.
The best was last year's at District 5050, where we were introduced to the true Polio Warrior, Ramesh Ferris. Ramesh became DG 5370 this year and his conference went over-the-top with
significant linkages to First Nations and KeyNote speakers literally from around the world. Celebrating the common theme "Teamwork Makes the Dream Work," the power of Rotary's graduate Fellows from World Peace and Conflict Resolution universities was on full, dynamic display. Hopefully, the presentations were recorded and will be available to all soon.
The forum on polio eradication was of course emphasized with PolioPlus International Representative Mike McGovern sharing the stage with Aziz Memon, the Pakistani PolioPlus Representative. Zone 28 PolioPlus chair, Jackie Hobal, and DG Ramesh completed the discussion group. Concluding the session, the results of the Miss Vicky 2026 Project were given in a celebratory check for the amount of $225,937.00. How about that? By Rotary's year end June 30th, Winston and Lee expect the amount to rise above $250,000. Thanks to all who have contributed so generously this year. Please be saving and getting ready to "Give till it feels good" in the next Miss Vicky 2027 Challenge for PolioPlus. Warmly, Lee and Winston

Why I am fundraising for The Rotary Foundation
Why I am fundraising for The Rotary Foundation
For only the second time in world history, a dread disease is being eradicated. Since 1984, Rotary’s PolioPlus campaign has led the charge, eliminating 99.9% of wild polio virus. From 350,000 cases and 50,000 deaths per year in 1984, we were down to just 12 cases in all of 2023. In the Spring of 2024, the Taliban stopped door-to-door vaccinations and the number of cases rose to 99 in the two remaining endemic nations of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The sudden jump demonstrates just how persistent and virulent is the wild polio virus. Like the EverReady Bunny, we must "keep on keeping on” lest polio returns and unvaccinated people are again needlessly at risk of paralysis and death. We’re indeed “This Close” but ever so far. To the unvaccinated, polio is just a plane ride away. Courage, Commitment and Cash will stem the tide. Thank you for your past generosity and your continued support by giving to Rotary’s signature program, PolioPlus.
